Pearls are June's birthstone - aren't Gemini's lucky? Pearls are considered a unique jewel, often referred to as the "Queen of Gems". They are the only gemstone formed under the sea and can come in different shapes, colours and sizes. They symbolise purity and generosity and are associated with wisdom acquired over time, it's traditional for brides to wear pearl jewellery and they're often given as graduation gifts.

How Are Pearls Formed?

Fun fact; pearls are created inside oysters and mussels, a foreign substance slips into the oyster between the mantle and the shell which irritates the mantle, it's kind of like the oyster getting a splinter. So, a pearl grows from something so small, like a speck of sand, into a beautiful gemstone.

There are two types of natural pearl, saltwater and freshwater. There are also cultured pearls, these are still authentic, however, humans assist in the process by implanting the splinter (a small bead or a piece of mantle tissue) into the oyster causing the pearl sac to form and eventually a pearl is created.

Caring For Your Pearls

Because pearl jewellery is soft and delicate, it should be stored separately, wrapped in soft material, away from other metal jewellery; this prevents the pearls from being scratched. As they’re porous, they mustn't be immersed in water or cleaning products, contact with perfume, hairspray and body cream may cause discoloration. When dressing always place your pearl jewellery on last, it’s less likely to get damaged. Wipe pearls clean with a soft cloth and use special pearl cleaning solutions if necessary.
