We’re proud to be partnered with Young Lives vs Cancer, the UK's leading charity for children and young people with cancer, and their families.
Working together since October 2014, we’ve raised over £1.5million to date – and we’re not stopping there. Today, 12 more children and young people will hear the devastating news they have cancer. Young Lives vs Cancer’s specialist social workers play a crucial role in making sure the right care and support is received from the moment of diagnosis. September marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on the children and young people affected by cancer, and the families and loved ones supporting them. Kylen’s Story
Kylen was diagnosed with leukaemia in June 2024, when he was just two and a half years old. His doctors estimated that his cancer treatment could last another two years. Kylen’s mum Flo and the family have been supported by Young Lives vs Cancer throughout.
Flo and her husband Daniel were completely floored when a consultant gave them the diagnosis. Like so many parents, Flo and Daniel had no idea that their child’s cancer would change every aspect of their lives and bring with it so much admin. Flo was self-employed, so her income stopped overnight as she cared for Kylen. At the same time, expensive congestion and parking charges in London could cost up to £45 a day.
“Within a week of Kylen being diagnosed we were drowning in paperwork. We didn’t know how we were going to manage financially or what we could do about it.”
“From the moment I spoke to our Young Lives vs Cancer specialist social worker Rebekah, she’s been so caring and understanding. She helped me get Disability Living Allowance, which has been crucial. There was a 72-page form to fill in and I was so exhausted that I didn’t even know where to start. But Rebekah was so patient, taking me through everything and ensuring I got the help I needed to apply.
“The Young Lives vs Cancer team were like my brain, thinking about all the things I couldn’t because all I could think about was him. I don’t know how our family would have got through all this without them.”
Eleanor’s story
In October 2024, Eleanor was diagnosed with stage 2AE bulky classical Hodgkin lymphoma after around 18 months of seeking answers for persistent symptoms and falling iron levels.
“I continued to say something was wrong, but I was told I was too young for anything serious,” she says. Her mum printed her blood results, highlighted the concerning changes and pushed for further investigation.
The diagnosis turned family life upside down. Eleanor’s mum stopped working to care for her, while her dad worked and supported Eleanor’s younger brother. With both parents self-employed, the financial pressure was significant.
Eleanor travelled around 90 minutes for treatment. Her Young Lives vs Cancer social worker, Mikela, arranged for her family to stay at Paul’s House, a charity Home from Home near the hospital.
“Mikela was always so supportive and helped my family in the toughest of times, like setting me up in Paul’s House,” Eleanor says. “Being able to stay somewhere just across the road was a huge privilege, it saved us from struggling even more than we already did.”
After finishing treatment, Eleanor travelled to Indonesia and had an amazing time volunteering at a turtle sanctuary. Since then she’s been working and mentally rebuilding after her experience, and is now moving forward with her studies and going on to university to study Broadcast and Multimedia Journalism.
Children and young people with cancer deserve better. Together, we will make change happen.

But your support changes everything.
It means the whole family can stay in one of Young Lives vs Cancer’s welcoming Homes from Home’s, close to specialist childhood cancer treatment centres. For families, it’s more than a free place to stay, it’s a place that feels like home. It’s having the time for a home cooked meal together or sharing a mug of hot chocolate with a bedtime story. Most of all, when everything else is uncertain, it’s the chance to simply be together.
Cancer doesn’t have to mean families are torn apart. That special moments are lost.
