It’s time to get your summer glam on and enjoy this season’s hottest jewellery trends. We all want to achieve that Love Island look when we’re on holiday – think chunky hoop earrings like Tasha, charming charms bracelets (looking at you Gemma), layered necklaces and statement rings à la Dami and Luca, but if you want to keep your look in check like the Islanders themselves, it means caring for your holiday jewellery so it keeps its thanks-its-new vibe. From how to carry jewellery while travelling, where to store it and more, our jewellery care tips are just what you didn't know you needed when doing your holiday prep. Scroll on.
Travelling with Jewellery
When it comes to packing your summer essentials, specifically jewellery, there are no restrictions on space (within reason), so pack that bracelet stack, those necklaces for layering and don't forget the earrings, rings and anklets. It's a whole look, after all. And the best bit? There are things you can do to make sure it keeps its sparkle (if you lose it, on the other hand, that's on you). From packing and storing to cleaning and caring, these are the hints and tips you've been looking for, so you can sparkle all day (and night) long.
Can Jewellery Go In Hand Luggage?
Yes, jewellery can be carried in your hand luggage and it's the best (and safest) place to keep it when you're on the move. As with all valuable items, your belongings are often safer within your cabin luggage, as your check-in baggage is more at risk of being lost or damaged during transport. So, keep your precious jewellery pieces close to you for peace of mind.
How To Pack Jewellery For Travel
We recommend using something – like a jewellery pouch or roll – so your holiday accessories together aren't running wild inside your bag. You can easily use a jewellery pouch for travelling, these are soft and mean small pieces like rings and earrings aren't damaged in transit (or worse, lost). You all know, dear readers how much we love a good neckmess, but not in the tangled, knotted kind of way, which is why for necklaces and bracelets, using a travelling jewellery case or box is a good way to keep them separated, you can even go as far as wrapping individual pieces in tissue paper to avoid the metals rubbing together (a good tip for any gold-plated or vermeil pieces).
Where to Store Jewellery On Holiday
When you’re on holiday always use the safe (if your room has one) to safely store your valuable jewellery when you’re not wearing it. If this is not an option, then wear it. You don't need to ask us twice. You'll get peace of mind as you'll know where it is so you can focus on the more important things – like what your next cocktail is going to be. We'll take a Seafoam Sangria, thanks.
Caring For Your Holiday Jewels
Whether you’re packing your favourite jewellery pieces for a relaxing staycation, a romantic city break or a beach-to-beach-bar holiday, here are our three top jewellery care tips for your peace of mind:
Wearing Your Jewellery In Water
Before jumping in the pool or taking a dip in the sea, make sure to remove your jewellery. Unless, of course, it's jewellery that can be worn in water, avoid swimming with it on, as water can cause a reaction and tarnish precious metals – green fingers, necklines or wrists are not a good look.
Sunbathing In Your Jewellery
Try to avoid sunbathing in your holiday jewellery. Direct sunlight can discolour metal and sometimes even damage any gemstones and jewels, plus it can soften the metal holding them, meaning they'll quickly fall out. So, if you're sun-seeking, leave the jewellery in the safe (or at least under the umbrella).
Keeping Your Jewellery Clean
Cleaning jewellery is something that is easy to forget, especially when you’re on holiday. But this is when it's most important. When jewellery comes into contact with chlorine, sand, and sun cream it's at its most vulnerable so more TLC is needed. One of our easiest jewellery cleaning hacks is to soak it in lukewarm soapy water and use a soft brush to gently remove the dirt – job done in seconds.
