It’s safe to say, the sentimental promise ring has had a resurgence in popularity. It’s arguably the hottest trend for the modern romantics and between friends.

Our guide to promise rings answers all of your questions and explains everything you need to know about trend – what they are, when to give one, and who you can give it to.
We also take a look into its history and the modern take on the promise ring. Think of this as the ultimate guide to promise rings. Your A - Z.
What is a Promise Ring?
A promise ring is a symbol of commitment. It’s used as an emblem to demonstrate devotion to a promise. Typically, it was thought of as a sort of 'pre-engagement' ring.
Today, there really are no rules when it comes to the promise ring. It can be a gift for your bestie, your mum, sister or yourself – to show a sign of commitment to something. Maybe a commitment to self-love, prioritising family or always being there for a friend.
What is the Meaning of a Promise Ring?
Just like a relationship, the meaning of a promise ring is entirely unique to each relationship. This will change from person to person.
Naturally, this has meant there are so many versions and variations of the meaning. That’s because people are making many different commitments to many different promises.
Typically, the promise ring was viewed as a symbol of commitment before an engagement. Giving a promise ring can be seen as a gesture that marriage will come, but it’s not the right time. Like a vow to an (eventual) engagement.
For some, the meaning might be tied up with monogamy with no intentions of marriage. It’s rather a symbol of devotion to the other person.
Promise rings have become a super fashionable trend between friends. Like a way of saying you’ll always be by each other sides. Hyping each other up in the bathroom and the boardroom. You may have also heard them being called friendship rings.
Or on the other hand, sporting a promise ring may be an act of self-love, a gentle reminder to a promise you’ve made to yourself.
So, the promise will be different depending on the relationship.
Who Buys the Promise Ring in the Relationship?
Historically, in heterosexual relationships, it was the man buying the ring for the woman. Similar to the traditional beliefs around engagement rings.
Today, relationships and the traditions aren’t as rigid as they once were. There are no rules around promise rings and you’re free to gift one whenever and to whoever you like.
You’re in the driver’s seat and we’ll be cheering you on whichever way you go.
What Style of Ring is a Promise Ring?
When it comes to the style of promise rings, it’s all down to personal taste. The design of a promise ring will be unique to your relationship – so the style possibilities are endless.
For a showstopping piece, go for a solitaire diamond. Who says they should just be for birthstone. Our birthstone guide talks you through the do's, the don'ts and will answer every question about the latest birthstone trends.
How Do You Wear a Promise Ring?
Since it’s a sentimental piece, we think it looks best if it stands out on its own. Let it be the showstopper.
Stack your other rings on your other fingers, but sport the promise ring individually.
We also love the idea of mixing your metals. Don’t be afraid to pile on your rings in every metal.
What Finger Should You Wear a Promise Ring On?
The finger you wear your promise ring on is entirely up to you. Traditionally, it was worn on the third finger of the right hand. But this is only so it’s not confused for an engagement ring.
Rules are made to be broken. So, wear your promise ring on whichever finger makes you happy.
What Metal Should A Promise Ring Be?
The metal you pick is dependent on a few factors. First, think about what colours the person getting the ring would usually opt for. Are they a bold gold person or have they sided with cool silver? Maybe even rose gold?
If we’re talking about durability, platinum is the strongest of all metals. It will literally last a lifetime. Yellow, white or rose gold is the next strongest option. And if they go for warm colours or warm-toned jewellery – we’re guessing yellow gold will be a sure thing.
If you’re wanting something a touch more affordable, sterling silver or stainless steel is another fabulous option.

What Is The History of The Promise Ring? Where Did They Come From?
The promise ring wasn't an official thing until the 1970s but the idea started in the ancient times.
Let’s go way back. In ancient Rome, the ‘betrothal ring’ was given as a kind of promise ring. In ancient Greece, rings were worn as a way to keep a loved one constantly on their mind.
Way back in the early 1700s, a new kind of ring called a ‘poesy ring’ became popular. It was a ring engraved with a poem or promise to a friend or lover.
But it didn’t get called a promise ring until the 1970s when it was known as the official pre-engagement ring.
Today, the meaning is totally up to the giver and the receiver. There really are no rules, except that you are promising something to someone. And like in ancient Greece, it’s a fabulous way to make sure you’re always in someone’s mind and on their finger.
